half pound and pound of silver
Went to one of the dealers I go to today and he had those large silver coins that read one pund and a half pound. They actually weigh 8 ounces and 16 ounces. He said that the mint printed them for regular people the way they marketed it. This way when they got it and weighed it on their bathroom scale it would weight the "correct amount" that most people thinkl. They(gubberment) wouldn't be baraged with tons of mail and returns because the sheeple don't know the difference between troy and Avoirdupois.
So the people on ebay that were selling these weren't ripping people off!!! Just thought I'd share. Also he said the pound one sold for 199.00 FIAT new... that's alot!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |
Re: half pound and pound of silver
What would the "gubberment" care? Those things aren't legal tender, and are not minted by the government. People might pitch a bitch to the dealer who sold it, or the mint that struck it in the first place. Don't confuse these bullion pieces with the change in your pocket. It's not from the same place.

Re: half pound and pound of silver
He's talking about people complaining to the government about fraud, not a currency issue.
People buy it, weigh it at home, think they are shortchanged and start filing complaints. If I bought PMs labelled one weight and it was ACTUALLY less, I'd go right to the cops or feds as well. That's a crime. BTW, a guy at work I've been talking to about silver just remembered that he bought a pound coin a couple of years ago. I told him to bring it in so I could look at it. He also said our co-workers gave him a lot of crap about buying it and what a lousy investment it was. We'll have fun tomorrow showing off his 80% gains or so. LikeGreen :cool2: |

Re: half pound and pound of silver
AJ,
I think you need to weigh those coins cause if they have pound and 1/2 pound printed on them they will not be 8 and 16 ounces. You need to remember you ar dealing with troy measures. |
Re: half pound and pound of silver
AgAuGal that is precisely what they are not. The weigh correctly for Avoirdupois, they were made to sell to the sheeple not people who knew what they were doing. they were weighed in front of me at the dealer I know...
So there is a discrepency but it's because they were sold to sheeple, not people in the know. As an example have you ever watched the coin auctions on TV...MAJOR RIPOFF!!!! But with all their charm and info the average person who knows nothing will buy them...not the collectors or the bullion buyers... As an example...The CC companies will solicit all sorts of stuff in their bills...Like two years ago they were selling the hammers for if the car goes in the water you can breack out...Stoped at an accident a year ago thirty people were banging on the windshield of a car thyat flipped.... for no reason other than they watch too much tv and thought the truck would blow up!!!!!!!!!!!! Very rare...no signs of smoke, gas, or flames!!!!!!! Sheeple can be very dangerous in a mob setting!!!!!!!! So back to the coins, they are Avoirdupois, not troy!!!! |
Re: half pound and pound of silver
do you have a pic? I have never heard of anyone minting a silver round and stamping one pound on it and it not be a troy pound. Do you know who minted them? Why would anyone try to sell silver in avd even if it was to sheeple? It doesn't make sense to me.

Re: half pound and pound of silver
Doesn't make sence to me either...I bought the one that said one pound but ut is in troy oz...just because it'd be my luck that the person buying would be confused...so I did stay away from the Avoirdupois ones....I'll scan it later it's stashed already...got to dig it out!!!!! hehehehe got Mt Rushmore on it...I believe it's 1981?:clap2:

Re: half pound and pound of silver
AJ,
I know they are a lot different in size. I have several of the "pounders" that I've picked up over the last couple of years, when I thought the price was right. I guess I should have said "don't confuse their origin with the change in your pocket. They are not from the same place". Sorry for the confusion. |

Re: half pound and pound of silver
My co-worker brought in the one pound 'coin' he bought and a 4 ouncer and couple other large coins.
The four ouncer said 'troy ounces' The one pounder just said "One Pound" They are very cool to look at. I think the four ouncers are Franklin Mint 'quarters' or something like that. They look like they were released in conjunction with the new state design quarters. LikeGreen :cool2: |
Re: half pound and pound of silver
No problem silverbullit I've just seen on this board in the past year or two we have to be very exact in what we say and type... so as to not get confused...I've seen many fights breakl out on this board cause some one took what someone typed but not exactly what they ment....
Hey reality check...I really wish it was funny...it's actually really scarey...the last accident I was at I left cause all I saw from what was going on was a major lawsuit!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I wasn't gonna be aprat of that!!!!!!!!!!!! |
Re: half pound and pound of silver
I just got ripped on ebay. Coins were delivered today from two different sellers. One was listed as 8 troy oz. coin. When I received it, I was able to read HALF TROY POUND. Two ounces of silver disappeared. Response is that, "I only do this for a hobby." The other coin from a coin collecter listed 16 oz as troy, but it clearly has AVDP stamped on the edge. I will not spend my money returning the rip offs. The difference in value will be refunded to me or a negative feedback will hopefully warn others about these unscrupulous sellers.

Re: half pound and pound of silver
I yelled that they should stop and that there wasn't a need for doing it and not to move her...they all yelled don't move her and kept trying to break and pull the windshield apart...I'd testify against them...but then I've seen too many things were why did you allow it....
Plus an older man who is an ex EMT yelled this out....That means he was taking charge and was pushing on the demolition of her windshield.... So in his case were he called out having a higher knowledge than the others he became the leader in a situation such as this...So even though I said something he was pushing on who am I next to him in this scenario? I do train people in CPR/FA, if I was an active EMT, Paramedic, Doctor Iwould have outranked him...but I'm not! So this is why I chose what I did. At Least I know no one was going to move her...and the courts would have probably justified the destruction of her windshield...not sure...not a lawyer either:banghead::rant: |

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Troy_weight
I have several of those bought way back in 2001. Some are in troy weght and some in regular weight. A pound regular is 14.6 troy ounces. period. a troy pound is only 12 troy ounces which are a tad heavier than regular weight. 16 ounces regular equalls only 14.6 ounces troy. The bars are marked and most people don't know what the difference is. I have a couple gold plated ones from washington mint that emulate huge saint guadens famous $20 piece in a 3 inch silver with gold plate over it. |
